‘Significant’ personal tax allowance rise on cards

The Chancellor of the Exchequer is set to unveil an annual budget next month that is widely expected to include a “significant rise” in the personal income tax allowance. High-level sources within the Treasury confirmed that the move is designed to inject immediate relief into household finances struggling with persistent inflation and high interest rates.

The personal allowance dictates how much income an individual can earn before they start paying income tax. A substantial increase would directly reduce the tax burden on millions of workers, particularly those in the lower and middle-income brackets. The measure represents a key component of the government’s strategy to stimulate consumer spending and demonstrate commitment to easing cost-of-living pressures ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.

While official figures detailing the proposed new allowance level remain under wraps, government sources indicated that the adjustment would exceed standard inflationary uplifts. A Treasury Minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the budget would focus squarely on economic dynamism. “We understand the persistent pressure families are under,” the Minister commented. “This budget prioritises putting more money directly back into the pockets of hardworking people, ensuring that they benefit tangibly from the nascent improvements we are seeing across the national economy.”

Such a move, however, would come at a considerable cost to public finances. Economists project that raising the tax-free threshold significantly could cost the Treasury several billion annually in lost revenue, complicating efforts to manage the national debt. Critics from the opposition benches argue that while tax cuts are welcome, they must be funded sustainably and targeted more precisely at the most vulnerable groups, rather than constituting a broad, pre-election giveaway.

The full details of the allowance adjustment and the associated fiscal calculations are scheduled to be revealed during the budget speech, which is currently pencilled in for the second week of March.
