Qatari State Minister Talks Tarique Rahman Over Phone

A senior Qatari official engaged in a telephone conversation with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, emphasizing Qatar’s enduring commitment to deepening cooperation between Doha and Dhaka, particularly in the aftermath of Bangladesh’s recent national parliamentary elections.

H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, initiated the call to Mr. Rahman, who is currently residing in London. The conversation reportedly centered on the ongoing political landscape in Bangladesh and opportunities for enhanced economic partnership and collaboration across various sectors.

Sources familiar with the discussion confirmed that State Minister Al-Khulaifi conveyed his country’s optimism regarding the future of bilateral ties, reinforcing the long-standing friendly relations between the two nations. While the Qatari minister primarily focused on strengthening state-to-state relations with Dhaka, the direct communication with the leader of the country’s main opposition party is viewed as a significant diplomatic engagement.

The call takes place at a sensitive time, following the contested January 7 parliamentary polls which the BNP boycotted. Tarique Rahman, despite leading the party from exile, remains a pivotal figure in Bangladeshi politics. His conversation with a high-ranking representative of the Gulf state underscores the diplomatic interest surrounding Bangladesh’s political trajectory following the election.

The State Minister is understood to have reiterated Qatar’s dedication to supporting Bangladesh’s development goals. Qatar is a vital partner for Bangladesh, being a primary source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a major employment destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers. Both leaders reportedly agreed on the necessity of continued dialogue to ensure regional stability and mutual prosperity.

The interaction highlights Qatar’s balanced diplomatic approach, maintaining communication channels across the political spectrum in Bangladesh as it looks to solidify long-term strategic and economic interests in South Asia.
