Google staff call for firm to cut ties with ICE

A significant number of Google employees are calling on the company’s leadership to formally sever all relationships and contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). More than 900 staff members have signed an internal letter opposing any company collaboration or involvement with federal immigration enforcement actions.

The movement highlights growing ethical concerns within the technology giant regarding the deployment of its infrastructure and software in sensitive government operations. Employees argue that any technological partnership with ICE places Google in direct complicity with policies that they claim violate human rights, specifically referencing the agency’s role in detention and deportation.

The letter, circulated internally before being made public, demands a clear policy commitment from Google’s executive team that would prohibit future contracts with institutions involved in enforcing policies deemed harmful to communities. Signatories are asking the company to ensure its powerful cloud computing and AI capabilities are not weaponized for surveillance or tracking purposes by federal agencies.

Internal unrest over government contracts is not new for Google. The company faced massive employee protests in 2018 over its involvement in Project Maven, a Pentagon initiative that used AI to analyze drone footage. That internal pushback eventually led the company to decide not to renew the contract and to introduce new ethical guidelines for its use of artificial intelligence, though those guidelines have been widely debated since their introduction.

The current demands place renewed pressure on Google CEO Sundar Pichai to reconcile the firm’s public-facing ethical statements—which emphasize social good and neutrality—with the substantial financial opportunities offered by lucrative government technology contracts. The employees’ appeal stresses that ethical responsibility must outweigh profit, particularly when the technology facilitates controversial enforcement actions.

As of this report, Google has not issued a specific public comment addressing the demands outlined in the letter, though the company generally maintains that it complies with all relevant laws and regulations pertaining to its cloud customers.
