Fake Melania Trump Only Needed 1 Joke To Explain What Her Documentary Is Really About

Actress Laura Benanti brought her critically acclaimed impression of former First Lady Melania Trump back to network television this week, appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The segment featured Benanti, in character, promoting a satirical “documentary” that she claimed would provide a deep look into her life following her departure from the White House.

The highly anticipated appearance quickly pivoted to political comedy, with Benanti’s “Melania” revealing the core thesis of her purported documentary, titled “Unsanctimonious.” When asked to explain the film’s purpose, the character summarized her post-White House existence with a single, highly suggestive joke: “The documentary is really about how you can’t be trapped in a gilded cage if you are never in the cage,” she quipped, strongly implying dissatisfaction with her past role and current living situation.

Benanti’s routine, which has been a staple of late-night satire since 2016, also took aim at several high-profile public figures. The actress frequently broke the fourth wall while discussing her “personal growth” and making veiled criticisms of former President Donald Trump. She joked that watching him “flourish” and “blossom” was like watching the slow-motion collapse of a sandcastle.

The segment further expanded its satirical scope to include others within the Trump orbit, notably Eric Trump. The character remarked that Eric was now running the family organization “mostly by himself, but with help from a full-time babysitter.”

Toward the end of the interview, Benanti’s impression also targeted tech mogul Elon Musk, expressing surprise that someone so influential had seemingly “destroyed Twitter” merely because he “wanted to be the cool kid.” The appearance marked one of Benanti’s first major late-night returns as the former First Lady since her widely circulated stage performances were curtailed.
