DU VC Niaz Ahmed Khan announces resignation

Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan announced his resignation on Tuesday afternoon, effective immediately, concluding his administrative tenure at the country’s leading public educational institution.

The announcement was formally made during a press briefing held around 3 pm. The venue for the briefing was the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom, located adjacent to the main vice-chancellor’s office complex.

Addressing the media regarding his departure, Professor Khan detailed his plans to step down from the executive role and return to his long-standing academic responsibilities. He confirmed that he would be seeking relief from his current deputation—the term for his special appointment as Vice-Chancellor—in order to facilitate his return to classroom duties.

Professor Khan specifically noted his intention to resume his primary function as a faculty member within the Department of Development Studies. His statement emphasized a desire to transition back to his core academic commitments.

“I will seek relief from my deputation, and I will return to my primary role as a teacher in the Department of Development,” Professor Khan stated during the briefing.

The resignation marks a significant shift in the university’s administrative leadership. Professor Khan’s decision to step down voluntarily and revert to departmental teaching duties underscores a move away from institutional administration, ensuring a swift transition as the university prepares for the appointment of an interim or new Vice-Chancellor.
