Dhaka-20 constituency: 13 polling centres identified as risky

Security measures are being significantly ramped up in the Dhaka-20 parliamentary constituency after law enforcement agencies identified 13 polling centres as highly sensitive or “risky” ahead of the forthcoming electoral event.

The identification was made following a comprehensive security assessment that scrutinized potential vulnerabilities, including records of past election-related disturbances, intense local factional tensions, and geographic challenges that could hinder rapid response from law enforcement. The designation signals heightened concern over the possibility of unrest, intimidation, or attempts to disrupt the polling process at these specific locations.

In immediate response to the classification, the authorities concerned are finalizing extensive plans to deploy additional security personnel to these 13 identified locations. Sources within the administration confirm that the standard security presence will be significantly bolstered, ensuring a high ratio of security officials per centre compared to polling stations designated as general or routine.

The specialized security teams designated for the high-risk centres are expected to include a robust contingent of regular police forces, supplemented by specialized paramilitary units such as the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP). Further consideration is being given to deploying rapid action teams and executive magistrates directly to these sensitive centres to handle immediate legal and order issues.

The objective behind the increased deployment is twofold: to act as a significant deterrent against potential perpetrators of violence and to ensure that election officials can conduct the balloting smoothly and without interference. Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the voting period. The proactive step ensures that the Election Commission’s mandate for a free and fair election is upheld, allowing all registered voters within Dhaka-20 to cast their ballots in a secure environment.
