Billie Eilish’s Brother Slams ‘Powerful Old White Men’ Outraged By Her Anti-ICE Speech

Musician Finneas O’Connell has strongly defended his sister, Billie Eilish, following significant right-wing criticism directed at the singer for making political statements during a recent awards ceremony. O’Connell publicly characterized the critics as “powerful old white men” who were angered by Eilish’s use of her platform to address immigration issues.

The controversy stems from Eilish’s acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards. While accepting a non-musical award, the 22-year-old artist deviated from a typical thank you speech to share a pointed political message regarding border security and immigration enforcement. She stated plainly, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” a phrase widely interpreted as an anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) stance and a critique of current U.S. border policy.

The statement quickly drew backlash across conservative media and social platforms, with many commentators arguing that Eilish, as a pop star, should avoid complex political topics.

In response to the growing online vitriol, Finneas O’Connell—Eilish’s older brother and primary musical collaborator—took to social media to lambast the nature of the criticism. He asserted that the outrage was largely driven by a demographic resistant to young artists speaking out on progressive issues.

“It’s truly incredible to watch a powerful old white man get so offended by a young woman using her voice,” O’Connell wrote in his defense of his sister. He reiterated that Eilish has the right to express her views, regardless of her professional status. “If your immediate reaction to ‘No one is illegal’ is fury, maybe you should think about why that is.”

The episode highlights the ongoing tension between political advocacy and entertainment, particularly as younger, globally visible artists like Eilish continue to incorporate social commentary into their public messaging. Both O’Connell and Eilish have previously utilized their platform to support causes ranging from climate activism to reproductive rights.
