BAF observes 57th death anniversary of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque
The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) solemnly observed the 57th death anniversary of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque on Sunday, February 15, 2026, honoring the heroic sacrifice he made during the crucial pre-independence period.
The main observance was centered at BAF Base Zahurul Haque in Chittagong, named after the martyr. The day’s proceedings included a Milad Mahfil and special prayers, with BAF officers, airmen, and staff participating to pay deep homage to the national hero.
Sergeant Zahurul Haque was martyred on February 15, 1969, while incarcerated in Dhaka Cantonment. He was one of the central figures accused in the infamous Agartala Conspiracy Case, officially titled the State vs. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Others. His killing by Pakistani military guards while in custody triggered widespread student protests and public unrest across the then-East Pakistan.
His martyrdom significantly intensified the 1969 Mass Uprising, which ultimately forced the regime of Ayub Khan to drop the Agartala Conspiracy Case and release all the accused. The spontaneous national response following his death is regarded by historians as a critical turning point that accelerated the independence movement.
During the Milad Mahfil, speakers recounted Sergeant Haque’s pivotal role in the struggle for Bengali self-determination, emphasizing his unwavering patriotism and commitment to the national cause. Special prayers were offered for the eternal peace of his departed soul and for the welfare of the nation. The BAF ensures that Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque’s legacy of courage and sacrifice continues to inspire subsequent generations of Bangladeshi airmen.
