Fire breaks out at Karwan Bazar garage

A major fire broke out this afternoon at a commercial garage located in the congested Karwan Bazar area of Dhaka. Five units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage the rapidly escalating situation.

The incident was confirmed by FSCD duty officer Shahjahan Hossain. According to Hossain, the blaze started inside the garage, which reportedly serves as both a vehicle repair shop and a storage facility for various spare parts and flammable liquids, shortly before 3:00 PM.

The immediate deployment of five fire units underscored the severity of the fire, as thick plumes of smoke were visible across the busy commercial neighborhood. Firefighters faced significant challenges controlling the blaze due to the presence of combustible materials and the narrow pathways surrounding the structure.

Teams focused intensely on containing the fire and preventing its spread to adjacent commercial structures, including smaller workshops and food stalls situated nearby. After approximately an hour and a half of sustained effort, FSCD personnel managed to bring the fire under control.

Preliminary reports indicate that there were no immediate casualties, although the extent of structural and material damage to the garage is believed to be substantial. Several vehicles undergoing repair within the facility are feared to have been destroyed or severely damaged.

While the exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation, authorities are considering possibilities including an electrical short circuit or improper storage of fuel and lubricants within the garage premises. Cooling operations are currently underway, and a specialized FSCD team is expected to commence a thorough investigation into the origins of the incident shortly.
