Oath day Tuesday: BNP back in office

Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was officially sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, marking the formal end of the prior administration and the triumphant return of the BNP to national governance following their overwhelming landslide victory in the recent 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

The oath-taking ceremony confirmed Mr. Rahman’s rise to the highest executive position. Despite being a first-time Member of Parliament (MP) after securing his seat in the February 12 polls, he takes the premiership backed by a powerful mandate delivered by the electorate. The landslide result positioned the BNP to form a robust government, concluding a period of intense political maneuvering.

The formal proceedings for both the Prime Minister and the new Cabinet were held at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building. This specific location represents a noticeable break with a decades-old tradition regarding the venue for the swearing-in of a new government, a detail highlighted by political observers covering the event. Hundreds of dignitaries, foreign diplomats, and senior political figures were in attendance to witness the transition of power.

Following Mr. Rahman’s oath, his appointed ministers were also sworn in, formally constituting the new administration. The composition of the cabinet is expected to reflect the party’s commitment to tackling immediate national challenges, including economic revitalization and governance reform, priorities heavily emphasized during the BNP’s successful election campaign.

With ‘Oath Day Tuesday’ now complete, national focus shifts immediately to the policy agenda of the new administration under Prime Minister Rahman, as the BNP assumes control of the country’s affairs for the coming parliamentary term.
