Protests Erupt in Rangpur Demanding Vote Recount
RANGPUR – Hundreds of activists and leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) staged a massive protest in Rangpur city on Sunday afternoon, demanding an immediate judicial recount of votes following the recent municipal elections. The demonstrators warned of fierce, nationwide agitation if their demands are not swiftly met by the Election Commission (EC).
The demonstration, which began around 2 PM in the city’s main square, saw key local BNP figures addressing supporters who gathered alleging widespread irregularities and vote rigging during the polling process held earlier this month. Protesters blocked major intersections for several hours, chanting slogans against the reported election outcome and alleged manipulation of ballot papers.
The core demand centers on specific constituencies where the party claims their candidates were unjustly defeated due to forced ballot stuffing and the expulsion of opposition polling agents. During the rally, a senior district BNP leader issued an ultimatum to the authorities, stating that the announced results were engineered and unacceptable to the people.
“We have gathered here today to issue a firm warning,” the leader stated. “If the Election Commission fails to order a full, transparent recount of every vote within the next 48 hours, the BNP will initiate programs far tougher and more severe across the country. These actions will paralyze the administration until justice is served.”
The protest marks a significant escalation of political tensions in the northern region. While the demonstration was largely peaceful, the heavy concentration of protesters caused significant traffic disruption. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the specific allegations of fraud or the 48-hour ultimatum. Representatives from the ruling party previously dismissed such claims as politically motivated efforts to discredit a fair election process. However, the opposition remains firm, preparing for potential intensive street action in the coming days should the EC ignore their call for a recount.
