‘DMP commissioner’s remarks being selectively circulated on social media’
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials have issued a strong denial regarding interpretations circulating on social media concerning recent remarks made by the DMP Commissioner. The police authority asserts that the comments are being selectively edited and shared without necessary context, leading to widespread misrepresentation.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the DMP, clarified the situation on Thursday, emphasizing that snippets of the Commissioner’s statement, originally made during a formal briefing, are being utilized to create a false narrative.
“We have observed several edited clips circulating across various social media platforms, including Facebook and X, which deliberately exclude the preceding and subsequent remarks of the Commissioner,” Rahman stated. “When viewed in their totality, the Commissioner’s comments provided a balanced overview of law enforcement policy and cooperation. The fragmented clips being shared strip this meaning away entirely.”
The controversy emerged earlier this week following a high-level meeting where the Commissioner reportedly addressed issues related to public order and the responsibilities of the police force in maintaining neutrality. Clips that went viral quickly drew criticism, prompting the necessity for official clarification.
Deputy Commissioner Rahman stressed that the selective circulation of media clips is a deliberate attempt to malign the Commissioner and the institution of the DMP. He urged media outlets, members of the public, and digital users to refrain from consuming and disseminating these truncated videos.
“We appeal to everyone to rely exclusively on the full official press release or established news reports that provide the complete context of the statement,” Rahman added. He confirmed that the DMP is monitoring the platforms and may take action against accounts responsible for the organized selective circulation aimed at creating public confusion.
