Tasnim Jara calls for EC intervention over obstructing polling agent
Independent candidate Tasnim Jara has urgently called upon the Election Commission (EC) to intervene immediately, following widespread allegations that her designated polling agents were systematically obstructed and barred from accessing voting centers during the election.
Jara, running as an independent, formally claimed that the actions taken by ground-level officials severely compromised the transparency and fairness of the electoral process, especially in key areas of her constituency. She stated that her agents were prevented from entering numerous polling stations based on what she described as “bogus rules” and arbitrary, last-minute instructions that lacked official basis.
The candidate alleged that the obstruction was not applied uniformly, suggesting a targeted effort designed to limit her independent representation within the centers. Polling agents are fundamental to ensuring electoral transparency, serving as watchdogs on behalf of the candidate, and Jara argued that their exclusion fundamentally compromises the integrity of the ballot box and the subsequent count in those specific locations.
Of particular concern, Jara highlighted the reported harassment and undue pressure faced specifically by her female polling agents. She claimed that several women were subjected to excessive scrutiny or outright intimidation, ultimately preventing them from carrying out their monitoring duties, which include verifying voter identity and securing the ballot count. She has urged the EC to take swift punitive action against any presiding officers or officials responsible for these disruptions.
Jara’s formal complaint submitted to the EC demands immediate intervention to ensure her duly appointed agents can perform their roles without hindrance. She insists that without guaranteed access, the legitimacy of the results in the affected centers must be seriously questioned. The Election Commission has not yet released a public statement responding to the independent candidate’s serious allegations of obstruction and agent harassment.
